In her 2018 memoir, ‘True Stories From An Unreliable Eyewitness,’ Lahti has mentioned both her deceased siblings. According to her, she had an older brother Ted and a younger sister Linda. Growing up in Michigan, Lahti always wanted to appear on TV and in film. She talked about her childhood dream of becoming an actress in an interview with Brazen Woman in June 2016. She said,

“I was born wanting to be an actress. I never had any other dream, except maybe to be a translator for the UN, which lasted for about a semester in college. When I was little, I’d put on plays in the backyard with a sheet and a curtain, and I was entrepreneurial enough to charge 10 cents.”

In pursuit of her dream, Lahti first joined Florida State University and studied Fine Arts. After that, she joined the University of Michigan, from where she graduated with a Bachelor’s Degree in Drama. Lahti then moved to New York City in search of opportunities in the acting industry. However, things did not present themselves as she had expected.

Before finding fame in acting, Lahti waited tables at restaurants and also worked as a mime in Central Park. Finally, in 1978, she landed a small part in the TV movie Dr. Scorpion. It marked the beginning of her flourishing career as an actress.
